Good Example for Kids Classes - 2008/04/17 14:38 Jake and Kevin,

I just wanted to point to a cool example from another kid's class.

http://www.mokurendojo.com/2008/04/graduation-day.html

The guy who writes this blog and runs this class is Pat Parker, my Judo instructor, and he posted the contents of a program he did recently for his kids promotion day. Some key points that I thought were particularly good:
  1. He gave an intro to the art. A lot of parents don't know what the heck judo is (or Brazilian jiu jitsu, or anything except for karate, really), so giving them the intro can increase their interest and engagement in what their kids are doing

  2. For the promoted kids, he had something specific (and nice) to say about each one of them and their development. This shows the parents that the instructor is paying attention to their kid, and it gives them an idea of how their kid stands out in the class

  3. To me, I think it all boils down to doing stuff that not keeps the kids engaged and feeling good, but - equally importantly - reaches out to the parents and engages them... They are ultimately the ones that need to drive the kids to class, that need to pay the bills, etc., so having some events that are taylored to the parents is a good idea, I think.

Just my two cents.
