Re:Judo ?? - 2007/11/12 11:00
Ok...So I read through the posts and wanted to weigh in here (I am the judo instructor, for those who don't know me); I'll try to remember all of the questions that were asked.
First, as for what gear you need, you really just need a gi, and even then, if you don't have one, it isn't a big deal (in fact, I am going to make another post about no-gi judo). Some guys wear cups in judo, but most don't because with all of the falling, it can really hurt. Knee pads are popular, but make sure to get good ones, otherwise you will be pulling them up all the time. No shoes or headgear unless you really need them.
You also asked about the etiquette of shooting for the legs. Shooting/leg picks are legal techniques, so it is fine to use them in practice, but I would agree with Karnalvor that you'll probably get better (at Judo and MMA) quicker if you try to use the stuff that we teach in class. Just like in any other art, every technique isn't perfect for every body. There are throws that I really never try in competition, but I made that call after several years of practice.
Lastly, about the falling, it really does suck at first (for most folks, at least). Once you get used to it, though, it really doesn't hurt. Learning proper falling technique will also help your MMA game, if you are in to that, by keeping you from getting rung when you get thrown. Did you see when Randleman suplexed the crap out of Fedor? If he hadn't been really good at falling, the fight would have been over shortly after that. Instead, he didn't need any time to recover and promptly 'Fedored' Randleman into submission.
